Glasscoat Pool & Spa Coatings
What is Glasscoat?
What is Glasscoat. Glasscoat is a high-performance, glass fiber-reinforced polymeric coating that was first developed for use in the industrial coatings industry, for corrosion protection of steel and concrete. It is therefore not a new concept, and can be used with confidence. The polymers used have been specifically modified to be used in pools.
Polymeric materials are revolutionary for pool resurfacing
Use of polymeric materials is revolutionary for pool resurfacing, as the traditional materials have been cement-based. Unfortunately, cement finishes break down in pool water as they are not corrosion resistant. Polymeric materials are inert, and not subject to degradation in the presence of water or pool chemicals.
The pool industry is a concrete based industry, so that means that contractors are not familiar with polymeric materials. This perpetuates the continued usage of cementitious materials for pool resurfacing. The fact is that cement performs poorly under immersion service conditions, with a break down of the material that leads to the blemishes and inadequate performance of plaster.
Glasscoat Out Performs Pebble, Quartz & Plaster
The pool industry has tried to rectify this by introducing specialty plasters, like pebble and quartz plasters. But these products have proven to not hold up, and display the same problems as basic white marble plaster. Additionally, it is also more of a sales gimmick to up- sell customers for higher price products. But in reality the benefits are not there. Cement products offer no warranty, as the material is deficient and there is nothing to guarantee.
Polymeric materials perform very well in hot water. In spas they do not break down like plaster finishes. In hot spas the plaster gets rough, spalls and harbors black algae, and a general deterioration of aesthetics. The polymer finish is not subject to degradation in hot water. This eliminates the on-going need to refinish the vessel.
Pool contractors and pool owners have been searching for materials that will perform better, and eliminate the problems associated with plaster. The only way plaster problems can be overcome is by using polymeric materials. That is why Glasscoat has been introduced to the pool industry because it is the only material that will perform well long-term. It lowers operational and maintenance costs. Glasscoat outperforms all cementitious products, pool paints and PVC vinyl liners. Glasscoat is very hard, wear, abrasion resistant, and a much longer service life than other resurfacing products.
Industry Pros Convert to Glasscoat
As the value of polymeric materials is recognized over cement-based finishes, the more pool industry professionals will convert to Glasscoat for their resurfacing projects.
